Notes on Networks with an attitude, Tuesday 9 April

< MIRROR >

*** Starting the day
offline; working on pointing the antenna to connect to Wireless Antwerp, which will be connected to the etherbox.

accepting the risk of no internet [which is dead so...]

desperately waiting for 5G internet (or not)

Setting some community guidelines:

- Watch your cappucino ordering, making sure everything can speak.

Diversity is important
- How to make sure all voices are heard? Step-up ... step-up! This means: If you are talking a lot step up to give more time for others, if you are silent a lot step up to bring your voice to the room.
- Thermometer gestures: non-verbal moving/dancing hands together up for agreement, in the middle = so so. both won't be discussed. but moving hands down means : not agreeing then we discuss.
- No stupid questions, no stupid answers
- No racism, sexism, transphobia, goodism, capitalism
- Say yes to care (everything is ok, until somebody says no?)

Space care
- The importance of unfolding and folding the event: infrastructural support is for everyone. Proposal: stop at 17:30, organise transport.

Image taking
- Red tape means yes, ok to be photographed
- Fuzzy logic: avoid portraits, close-ups of faces
- Put your pictures on etherbox before publishing them on-line. To remove images, you can log in to etherbox and erase them (commandline):
  • ssh pi@etherbox.local
  • login: pi
  • pass: raspberry
If not comfortable, add pictures to this list: http://etherbox.local/pad/p/remove
- The etherbox gallery can be accessed here http://etherbox.local/images/gallery.html

Recording Audio + video
- Public events will be recorded (video)
- No video of working processes/individuals (video on Monday was consented by speakers)
- If for memory reasons, someone wants to record something, you check with the group.

*** Clustering / fragmentation

After that, time for fragmentation and clustering!
Trying to note ideas per table (10m)
- Re-grouping/clustering after

Emphasis on Interconnectedness

Table 1 (11 o'clock)

Network
-Wireless Antwerp
- 5G giving to public use
- transport network
- VHF

Attitude/Points of VIew
-Advocacy for Percentage of Public Access
- rejection: Surveillance & Monetizing Antwerp for Research and Trickery - S.M.A.R.T
-attitude : questioning
Caution Analysis
-Proactive, hands-on

building an infrastructure by shipping resources to other places (eg palo alto)

how "other" cultures deal with technology ? - refusal of certain technologies; what possible attitudes

Wireless Antwerp - setting up the antenna for the boat can be a practical way to see what this means
(an afternoon activity)

interested in the cafe boat message board (at the museum, yesterday)
the ad-hoc postal network
How to implement that! << I'd like to think about that too!

table 2 :

Networks
5g and the smart world
What would a queer slicing mean
think in terms of metaphors :
instead of refusal, an attitude of and-and
the most basic form of communication : telepathy, and all other things is augmentation
tools: storytelling, water, crystals, trees, mountains...

Attitudes
decolonial and queer point of views (and problems within de-colonial: it is a colonial idea)
ch'ixi - aymara: a mixing
dividual pov : we're not separated and discrete entities, but we are interconnected and inhabited
life is in the center of the network : empathy
spirituality as emphathetic attitude
A vivid network
indigenous, cyborg
one body is a network in itself : many living entities there

table 3

http://etherbox.local/pad/p/snails
Attitudes / Points of View
snails are forming a network: slow but connected
multispecies networks :
ex rodents eat fiber cables
snail network rfc? Pigeon network rfc
Different ways to finish the kill of the internet
Finding alternative networks and meshing mobile devices together
Networks and their consequences: how network images are linked to earth/natural words/images

asynchronous/small/redistributed networks

building a new mesh network where everyone takes part equally

how do we kill the internet ?
How can we kill the internet?
- physical software attack
- social engineering attack

network vs physical environment : cutting trees for implementing 5 G
language: taken from ecology: clouds, space...
5G affecting environment

futuropias : imaginaries that can be pushed to incluse new ones, future over 50ys > 300 ys
can be linked to storytelling, other narratives

Queering networks: other ways to keep in touch
without being force to comply

rodents->fiber cables eat pigeon->pigeon emit sonars->EMF emit snail->snail network pigeons->weapons rodents rodents fiber cables fiber cables pigeon pigeon sonars sonars EMF EMF snail snail pigeons pigeons weapons weapons
I love this graph

:-)

Table 4

Attitudes
what is dead? what is living?
how can dead be also inbetween (see: internet) (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tardigrade )
notion of fermentation: dead thing is living in another way
what is the bacteria in the network? Human beings?
what is the web? is it the network of people? or the wires?
non-binary possibilities of network agents
attention, money, love - related to networks
predatory aspect of the internet - takes all attention, work, social relations

talking about topologies. Network as a verb, not an object. Thinking about networks. Gnutella!

spying as a way of relating and networking - to spy
IRC is collaboration tool - to collaborate

networking as a verb
Other vocabularies, network topologies : graphs : nodes, knots, fabric, contact zones...

intensities, as another way of discussing networks.

TABLE 5

(david):
resource networks <> economics (supply-demand, signalling, etc)
"network is not good enough" ... "same problem as in p2p - What is, what constitutes a peer"
post-liberal networks, network membership, cognitive dissonance
"I want new comrades" and will share a manifesto
    supply and demand
    would like new comrades

(cristina):
genealogy of server/servant , how is serving used in peer-to-peer distributed networks
    varia group:
        (self-organized artist-designer-programmer goup in rotterdam)
        * What does it mean to have own digital infrastructure (as a group)? create fabric of networks
        * How to inter-relate with other groups?:
            ->>> TOTALISM🔗intersub ... http://totalism.org/intersub
How the term server has changed over time
book (Markus Krajewski - THE SERVER)

David: 'I have a tool to turn etherpads in more readable documents'
Define 'more readable', maybe? :
    see http://e2h.totalism.org !

martino:
"what is a network is INFLUENCED by the recent history of internet tech"
how much our understanding of network is linked to US history US imperialism
" " net neutrality " " for instance [is a scam]

relating politics of the network to geopolitics

Network basics cheat sheets!

<---------------- (now) a b o v e

* The piratebox Etherpad was last updated June 2018
Several vulnerabilities have been discovered since then

* omniscence > telepathy (no communication > communication)

* upkeep etherpad:
    install the basic plugins !
    update it !

* problems of etherpad common editing:
defining roles (EDITOR - invoke for merging, etc)
