To celebrate the reissue of House of GVSB, Scott McCloud (Girls Against Boys, Soulside, Paramount Styles, New Wet Kojak) shared some albums on Touch and Go/Quarterstick that are memorable and meaningful to him:
I love so many records in this extraordinary catalog - but rather than expressing my adoration for:
Big Black, Scratch Acid, the Jesus Lizard, Slint, Blonde Redhead, Kepone, Tar, Mule, PW Long, June of `44, Brainiac, The Monorchid, Skull Kontrol, Arcwelder, Enon, Negative Approach, Ted Leo, Urge Overkill, TV on the Radio, Uzeda, Nina Nastasia, Killdozer, Storm & Stress, Didjits, Don Cab, CocoRosie, Shellac,
and countless others, as so many have,
I’m highlighting a few other releases which happened, for whatever reason, to cross my mind this particular evening sitting at my local cafe in Vienna, Austria.
Rachel's - Handwriting:
Music for a dark, foreboding film that never existed? Touch and Go going neo-classical? A trend-setter for sure. This release is full of wonderfully tense atmospheres, beauty, some noise, something like a soundtrack to a lost Jim Jarmusch film, or maybe a film of your life you have yet to write. The record is urging you to write it. I attended a Rachel’s performance at the old Knitting Factory in NYC around the time of this release. Was blown away. An absolute gem worthy of revisiting. Often.
Dirty Three - Ocean Songs:
Again, the sheer beauty, the simplicity. Raw emotion in music with no need for words. I saw Dirty Three one night in Manhattan, at the Mercury Lounge, around this period. At the start of one song, Warren Ellis said - ‘This next song goes out to a dear friend of ours, who is no longer with us, and this makes us sad as we don’t get to see him so often anymore.’ I think Warren was near to weeping on his violin while playing, and honestly it was so incredibly moving. Listen to ‘Deep Waters’ on this excellent release, you will be moved.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs s/t EP:
Around this time in NYC it was obvious that YYY’s were going to be a big thing. Karen O’s style of unhinged raw emotive (and gorgeous) singing was the talk of the town. Nick Zinner’s sinewy, grand guitar stylings and Brian Chase’s superbly minimal and musical drumming completed the sound. And yet, they were all cool modest younger people I would see sometimes at bars in the East Village, I’d maybe even regale them with old stories after I was done with my rituals of writing in the corners, and GVSB had the pleasure to invite them on tour early on. The YYY’s song ‘Our Time’ seems really about their time, as an emerging band. A statement of intent, which is such a punk rock tradition. YYY’s took their ‘time’ by both horns, and stormed the world, and it seems to me they did so with a keen sense of awareness for things that came before, in this long history of underground music.
Such is the legacy of Touch and Go.
